A Nuchal Translucency (NT) scan is a screening ultrasound. It measures the fluid at the back of your baby’s neck, which can help assess the risk of chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Trisomy 18, and Trisomy 13.

This test does not diagnose a chromosomal abnormality. Instead, it identifies whether your pregnancy has a higher or lower risk compared with others of the same gestational age.

The NT scan is combined with a maternal blood test.

During the scan, your sonographer will also check early fetal anatomy and placental development.

If the nuchal translucency screening indicates a increased risk of genetic or structural conditions, your referring doctor will discuss the results with you any recommended follow-up or further testing.
